Beware of the Heating Penatly
Here at Great Lakes Systems we have had countless requests for quotes on "white energy saving" roofs. Our response is, "Have you heard about the heating penalty?"
The use of white roofing materials has increased dramatically over the last 10 years. We estimate it to average about 50% of our annual installations in terms of square footage installed. In some cases that is due to LEED points available on new construction projects and in others it is that owners are following the trend of 'energy efficiency' and ENERGY STAR ratings.
To be truly energy efficient we recommend a complete system design that takes into consideration insulations needs, heating & cooling days, building use, energy cost and roof system design. This includes doing a ROOF SAVINGS CALCULATION to identify what the best type of roof for your needs.
For example, on a 10,000 SF gas heated facility in Grand Rapids, MI the cooling benefit of a white roof would mean savings of $128 per year but the heating penalty would be $449 for a net penalty of $321. In this situation we would recommend a black roof. This is a very simple example leaving out many other variables. The point is that one size doesn't fit all.
